Description:

The Memories of Ana Calderon is a thought-provoking novel which follows one woman's struggles for self-realization amid constricting cultural, social and familial barriers. The Memories of Ana Calderon is a fictional memoir of a talented woman, born in tradition-bound Mexico, who comes to the United States and greater opportunity only to find that here, too, society, family and religion conspire to hold her back. Her family's forced migration from Mexico to Los Angeles provides the backdrop for a series of conflicts which ultimately lead to Ana's development into a strong, independent woman. In order to succeed, Ana must give up all that she holds dear. She must re-make herself into a rootless and obsessed businesswoman. Ana Calderon has will, guts and intelligence, but her battle against family, the church and the justice system will shake our belief in our ability to forge our own destinies.

Alternating between poignant first-person reflection and third-person author narration, The Memories of Ana Calderon spans the years from childhood to maturity, exploring through Ana's colorful voice such issues as sibling rivalry, sex, first love, independence, cultural expectations, religion, and the kindness of strangers. The novel is relentless in emotional intensity and quickly pulls the reader into Ana's cycles of happiness, loneliness and despair. An engaging plot and poetic language heighten the experience of traveling with Ana as she searches for meaning, and finally finds it through pain.
